What kind of garden do we want?

So, our first thoughts for the garden, guided by the wisdom of gardening books, was that we should have a lawn, with beds alongside, an area for the kids to play in and an area for growing vegetables.

But we’ve been watching the garden for a year now and that idea just isn’t going to work.  For a start, the natural place for vegetables at the end of the garden doesn’t get enough light.  I know because we’ve tried (halfheartedly) to grow some things there and they haven’t prospered.  The front of the garden (nearest the house I mean) is the best place for light, even though it’s in the shadow of the house in the morning.

This set me thinking, what if we could create a garden that didn’t have zones, but had lawn for running, things for playing on, places for adults to entertain and relax and fruit and vegetables, all jumbled in together?
